KEEPING HEALTHY THIS HAJJ.

Next month, Muslims will be flocking to Mecca, as Islam requires believers to travel once to Mecca for hajj during their lifetime. Last year, the pilgrimage drew over two million Muslims from 188 countries, speaking every language on earth.  The result is a beautiful experience, but also a challenge for those tasked with keeping so many people healthy.

In 2013, 1.2 Million pilgrims were treated in local hospitals for minor to major health issues..  This hajj, the average person will be walk more than 65 kilometers, taking about 72,000 steps and burning 18,000 calories. If you will be participating, it is important to take care of your health.
The WHO (World Health Organization) publishes a list of vaccinations before hajj. The WHO also stresses the importance of good basic general hygiene by:

Washing your hands frequently,
Covering your mouth and nose if you sneeze,
Avoiding undercooked meat, and
Washing vegetables thoroughly before eating them.

TIMEZ5, the makers of the world’s first physiological prayer mat, has some advice this hajj season. “Health isn’t a chore. It’s a lifestyle that has been prescribed and promoted as part of a holistic Muslim lifestyle,” the companies Founder, CEO, and student of Muslim physiology Nader Sabry said, adding, “these healthy lifestyle habits should be a natural extension of our daily lives.”  TIMEZ5 recommends, stretching exercises to protect joints and boost energy.  Straight leg raises, can relieve knee pain, and back extensions  can fight back pain.

The anti-microbial surface of the TIMEZ5 NASA-inspired prayer mat helps protect you from the spread of airborne illnesses.   Additionally, the mat also uses special high performance materials designed to relieve body pain, reduce fatigue, and stabilize posture

A good daily routine is also important. Prepare your body for walking by eating regular, nutritious meals. Drink water often, especially when exposed to the sun. Protect your skin from direct exposure, and watch for signs of overheating. And get plenty of sleep to let your body rest.

The hajj is a beautiful melting pot. With a little caution, it will also be a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
